concluso nel 2019 che ha avuto tra i suoi partner anche il Libero Consorzio Comunale di Agrigento.
Nella nota è stata espressa grande soddisfazione per i risultati raggiunti dalle varie azioni finalizzate alla salvaguardia della popolazione di Tartaruga marina Caretta caretta e alla riduzione della mortalità nelle catture accidentali che purtroppo ogni anno interessano oltre 130.000 esemplari in tutto il Mediterraneo.
Gli attrezzi da pesca sono stati migliorati per diminuire efficacemente le catture accidentali, pur mantenendo un livello ottimale di catture commerciali, e sono stati ampiamente distribuiti tra i pescatori in diversi porti in Italia aumentando l’interesse per il loro uso.
La Commissione Europea ha valutato positivamente tutte le azioni, comprese quelle che hanno visto direttamente impegnato lo staff del Settore Ambiente del Libero Consorzio Comunale di Agrigento sia nelle attività di informazione e consulenza agli operatori professionali della pesca sulle opportunità offerte dai fondi FEAMP, sia nelle attività di informazione e sensibilizzazione a docenti e studenti delle scuole di tutta la Sicilia, ai turisti e alle popolazioni locali.
Tra le altre attività sostenute dal Libero Consorzio di Agrigento anche il potenziamento del Centro di Recupero Tartarughe Marine e Fauna Selvatica di Cattolica Eraclea, nel quale sono stati curati diversi esemplari di questa specie a rischio di estinzione.
Grazie all’impegno di tutti i partner, il progetto Tartalife ha permesso la creazione della prima etichetta di qualità "Turtle Safe” per le imbarcazioni che aderiscono ai principi previsti dal regolamento dell'ONG "Friends of the Sea". “Il marchio - scrive la Commissione Europea - è un valore aggiunto di questo progetto perché permette di riconoscere le attività di pesca a basso impatto per la biodiversità e per le tartarughe marine in tutta l'area del Mediterraneo.
Un ulteriore tassello, dunque, all’ esperienza dell’ex Provincia Regionale di Agrigento nei vari progetti per la tutela della biodiversità finanziati dallo strumento LIFE+ dell’Unione Europea.
Le coste della Provincia, oltretutto, sono mete predilette dalle mamme Caretta Caretta, scelte come luoghi in cui lasciare al sicure le proprie uova in attesa della schiusa. È di pochi giorni fa, ad esempio, la scoperta del primo nido di tartaruga lungo il litorale di Ribera. Progetti come quello di riduzione della mortalità durante le attività di pesca, aumentano, infatti, la possibilità che sempre più esemplari di tartaruga nidifichino lungo le coste agrigentine, così da rallentare il rischio estinzione della specie protetta.
