L’area pedonale urbana è stata istituita con delibera di giunta. Il provvedimento indica vie interessate, giornate, orari, e motivazioni della scelta. A rimanere chiuse al traffico veicolare saranno Corso Vittorio Emanuele (nel tratto compreso tra piazza Saverio Friscia e l’incrocio con Vicolo Cappellino) e Via Roma, che si aggiungono alle altre aree del centro storico già pedonalizzate come Via Garibaldi e Piazza Don Minzoni. Nel mese di luglio, la chiusura alle auto avverrà nei fine settimana, da venerdì a domenica, dalle ore 20 all’una di notte. Nel mese di agosto tutti i giorni, dal lunedì al giovedì dalle ore 20 all’una e dal venerdì alla domenica dalle ore 20 alle due. Un provvedimento atteso da tempo, soprattutto dalle attività commerciali della ristorazione, per avere a disposizione gli spazi esterni senza il transito delle auto e visto anche che le regole sul distanziamento sociale hanno imposto a tutte le attività di rivedere la propria organizzazione dei posti riservati ai clienti. Il provvedimento, commenta l'amministrazione comunale, ha l’obiettivo di aumentare la vivibilità del centro storico e rafforzare sempre di più la sua destinazione di centro commerciale naturale, di luogo della memoria e dell’arte, di riferimento culturale del territorio.
